Florian Bayer & Olivier Kugler
Schiefe Bahn / A Tea in Iran (Illustration / Reportage)

Two illustrators, two different issues and countries. Armed with pen and brush, Florian Bayer and Olivier Kugler get in touch with an everyday life we usually don´t realize. The Underground U8 is one of the biggest selling points of hard drugs in Berlin. Police and politicians seem to be powerless because dealers are often 11 year - old children. Brought to Germany from countries as Lebanon e.g. they are too young to be put on trial. On behalf of the magazine “Neon”, Florian Bayer tried to get an insight of these childrens´ everyday work. How does it feel to be underground all day? How is their behaviour towards Junkies and the police? How does this eyploiting system work? Is there still a spark of childhood or are they hard-bitten like their bosses? Olivier Kugler toured Iran for one month. He met the trucker Massih and joined him on a 3-day trip to Kish, a small island in the Persian Gulf. For french magazine “XXI” he illustrated the 30-page journal “Un Thé en Iran” – a portrait of Massih and his journey. Florian Bayer won the LeadAward 2011 in bronze for “Schiefe Bahn”. Olivier Kugler gained the V&A Illustration Award 2011 for “ A Tea in Iran”.
